![]() ![]() The service is decentralized (no, not in a blockchain way), describing itself as a “federated network which operates in a similar way to email.” Mastodon might look like a Twitter clone at first glance, but the underlying system behind the microblogging platform is far more complex. “My personal income will thus be lower but I was willing to go this route because I want Mastodon to have more resources for things like hiring extra developers, UX designers, developing official apps and so on, and I want there to be a clear boundary between fundraising for that cause and my personal income.” “Unlike the past 5 years that I’ve been running Mastodon operations as a sole proprietor, where Mastodon’s income was my personal income (minus all the expenses), I am now an employee with a fixed wage,” Rochko wrote in a blog post last year. Unlike Twitter, Facebook, Reddit or any other popular social media site, Mastodon is a nonprofit, meaning that, ideally, its goal is to benefit the public, rather than shareholders. Mastodon was founded in 2016 by German software developer Eugen Rochko. But if you’re looking to try something new on the social internet, then why not give Mastodon a whirl? Elon Musk isn’t there! What is Mastodon? ![]() If you’re a Twitter purist who likes to use basic functionality like private DMing, quote-tweeting and user-friendly onboarding, Mastodon might not be for you. But what is Mastodon, and should we all be getting our accounts set up? Since October 27, when the SpaceX and Tesla CEO formalized his Twitter takeover, Mastodon has gained nearly 500,000 new users, effectively doubling its user base. It’s great that there are now picture book versions of the stories too.As Twitter users fret over the direction that new owner Elon Musk is taking the company, masses of users have hopped over to Mastodon, an open source Twitter alternative. I loved Tove Jansson’s stories about the Moomin family when I was a child. My daughter finds the stories about life with the Large family very amusing, there’s always something going on with four young elephants in the house! We were thrilled when author Lorraine Francis recommended Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers as my daughter loves the stories about family life on a remote Scottish island. We looked through our bookshelf to find some of our favourite book families. Researching a family tree is such a fascinating subject and this is a lovely book for a child to be able to complete their own record.Īuthor: Catherine Bruzzone / Illustrator: Caroline Jayne Church Children can add step sisters or step brothers to the siblings page but it would also be useful to include a page for step parents. I would love to see alternative versions of The My Family Tree Book to incorporate different family structures, e.g patchwork families, stepfamilies and families with single sex parents. These include looking at maps to find out where relatives live or were born, finding out more about the year that the child was born and reading family diaries and old school reports. Where possible it is a lovely activity for a child to do with a grandparent and my daughter is looking forward to asking Grandma and Grandpa questions when we next visit.Īt the end of the book there is also a list of suggestions to stimulate extension activities. The grandparents’ pages also include interesting information, how old was grandma when the child’s father or mother was born, jobs that grandparents have had and the chance for them to share a memory with the child. where we went to school and what jobs we have had. My daughter has really enjoyed filling out the book and finding out more about me and her dad, e.g. There are two spaces for photos and a frame where the child can draw their own picture. At the beginning is a double page spread for the child and each parent to fill in and includes sections about birthdate and place, hair and eye colour and favourite food. My Family Tree Book is beautifully laid out with plenty of space to record information. It is a beautifully illustrated activity book for children to record information about parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins and draw their own family tree. I have bought My Family Tree Book for several children as presents and my daughter has just received a copy from her grandparents. ![]()
